Lightright, Details are small elements. You do not need details to recognize a subject But you need details if you want to enlarge or crop a picture. Karroly, the people in general who takes smartphone photos would be more likely to print them for albums or even a small frames, not on art galleries.

There's a reason why they hire professional photographers for big events so they can enlarge them in the future. Lightright, I am aware of what you say.

Lightrigt I meant accessories you wore, decors adorning the magnificent place you paid hundreds for entrance into, some other visitors standing on the balcony above you and their items of interest , among others. At the scale of tens of years, it is these details that mattered at all.

Phone photos generally look decent when downsized around to MP, but after that starts to fall apart to a muddy mess. Washed out colors and harsh highlight clipping are other typical flaws.

It has been like that for years even though new phone model ads are claiming there is huge advancements. Raw images at iso 50 look great to my 24' EIZO. Please don't take screenshots from thumbnails. It's a bad habit you should quit immediately.

You're a grown person now! There is a phone on the market with a 1" sensor Aquos R6 , but the reviews are not glowing and it's 9. It's funny because there is a significant segment of the market that has been screaming at Apple for years to get over their obsession with thinness in the interests of providing a bigger battery, so that's 2 major potential benefits of a thicker phone.

But to be fair they seem to have sorted the battery life issue without thickening their bodies mostly by going large in the other 2 axes! Since absolutely no one is listing sensor size the proper way, here we go. Sensor Size Diagonal in mm. Images look pretty good for quickie test shots.. I planned on getting a 13 pro to replace my 11 , just another tool I will use in my image making tool box..

My main takeaway from this is: never shoot at more than iso. But that's been the case since forever. Nice to finally have a 'telephoto' above 50mme, but that's about it. The 'macro' mode is not impressive. I thought I don't know how to take pictures with my phone. All reviewers were gushing about image quality of recent flagship phones, all computational photography features. But if you're showing this eye shot as exemplary quality in a sample gallery, it seems that I was wrong.

I know how to take pictures, but all these phones are crap. There's literally zero detail in the iris. Any texture was reduced to mush. It's lower resolution but there's more detail in the iris than a phone camera can do 20 years later. For Minolta A1: 3. For iPhone: 1. The resulting total depth of field for A1 is 0. My wife's iris is slightly out of focus and still has more detail in the iris than the part of your wife's eye that's in the focal plane.

DarnGoodPhotos: the iris is not in focus with the minolta camera. Also, the phone has to be extremely close to the subject which gives a fisheye like effect. Without pixel peeping I'd say that this solidifies the demise of a dedicated compact camera for the general audience. The vast majority see acceptable the results and praise the convenience of using a phone camera.

The photographic enthusiast, much like most of us here, still appreciate the ergonomic advantages of a dedicated camera. Times of transition for sure. Well, if one wise with their money and happy with current phone Canon ixus hs is only dollars or ixus is only 50 bucks and yield same iq instead of dollars for this level of iq can't beat the convenience tho.

Correction photo snobs on this sight , people whining about sharpness, colors and so on , none of that matters if the images has guts and soul.. Alam12, compacts would definitely be a compelling cost option, if camera companies introduce advanced imaging techniques with it at a smartphone level.

Unfortunately, current small sensor compacts doesn't have the ability to capture high dynamic range, substantially cut noise levels and produce good low light image quality currently available to even low cost smartphones.

Some of these smartphones are also IP rated water proof of if it isn't, you can always get a cheap plastic jacket you can put your phone inside for protection. Okay, let's say it's true, but images on smartphones will most likely only ended up in social media. You can't separate the camera part of smartphones from everything else they do, and the inconvenience of carrying a separate even small-sensor compact is significant.

If it does then good image quality, while not essential, improves it. Some people don't care about IQ and that's fine, but others do, and that's also fine. It's great the latest phones continue to improve the IQ possible from the camera you literally ALWAYS have with you, but these samples still fall short for me and even at this level I'm looking at getting an APS-C compact to complement my DSLR so I can grab impromptu shots with greater-than-smartphone quality more of the time, because like many people I like sharpness and colours, detail, low-noise, dynamic range, etc, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Alam12 Of course there are simple solutions to not having room in one's pockets for a dedicated compact camera, but we're not talking about people who are "into" photography here, but rather the "general audience" referred to by Cerridwen.

Red, I doubt it has "replaced" most people's camera: almost certainly the vast majority of people who own a smartphone never owned a camera. For those who did own a camera, well For those who care about photography having all of the options and performance of an actual camera can't be replaced by two focal lengths or three and absolute rubbish image quality from smartphons.

At least for me, the iPhone 12pro and now the 13pro already replaced my Fuji XV in most situations. The Xs was the reason I sold my Fuji mirrorless equipment for the XV, because I did not want to carry so much gear with me anymore.

If I look at my photo collections for our yearly photo books, calendars etc. Yes, they are not that "clean" as the Images taken with the Fuji. But I was able to capture more memorable family images with the phone cameras. Edited some raw files in Lightroom, lots of information, great color. Amazing progress overall. Sorry people, if you think computational trickery can overcome the physics of a tiny sensor, you're sorely mistaken. Not even snobbery, it's fact.

If people want to take photos on their smartphones, I'm not going to look down on them. Ghoulish very confident I'm right on this one. Trickery can only do so much, and it makes me cringe when people honestly think it can match.

Fine if you want to take nice snapshots, but falls far short if you're looking for the image quality even the most basic of DSLR provides. Like if I take a photo when something like a D, it doesn't fall apart if I even marginally zoom into it.

No mush. If you are willing to bet for static shots, my phone with gcam will destroy your APS-C from , if you are willing to bet send me a pm. Getting same FOV is going to be very difficult. I was shooting a Nikon D50 in , which was 6mp. The D80, which I later upgraded to, came out that year with a 10mp sensor. I'd submit a few raw files for comparison but I wasn't sensible enough to shoot any raw back then.

A comment above mentioned that someone had done an analysis on the last generation of iPhones' images and determined that despite having a 12mp sensor the actual detail captured was more akin to mp at best in good light , and that's not accounting for other lens qualities than sheer resolution, or noise performance, dynamic range, etc.

And I've also just seen the 3 samples you posted under the Pixel 6 leaked images article - very impressive. I might have to take a closer look at that phone Ash, Absolutely the truth and has nothing to do with anyone's view of the usefulness of photography on a phone. Different tools have different uses and that varies with the user, but it's simply a fact that the image quality coming out of phones is pretty unimpressive when compared to that available from larger sensors.

Since my iPhone 3GS I've probably shot about 10, images on various phones. Those images have value but I can still acknowledge that the image quality is nowhere near my R It's just funny that if you state a simple, objective fact about where a phone image falls on the spectrum of image quality people come unglued and shout about what a snob you are.

It's a shame that in our modern world people have been taught to equate their feelings to facts, and if you feel personally offended then it doesn't matter what words were actually spoken. I know this is a thread about iPhone but when it comes to computational technology the best is probably Google camera port on Android with multi frame RAWs, they are by far better than this mushy jpegs That said, I will be more inclined to buy this for video.

The future is now and compact video devices are more important than compact cameras. As the world shifts towards video, photography will be saved. For me as a mobile photographer this samples don't make me WOW really.

I don't like apple ProRAW format because it have noise reduction by default and lower sharpness versus Gcam. Francesco Because they can't manipulate raw data ashbashbeard Prove it! I see different things. They look great at full size on my 12 pro Max. Not the case with typical smartphone photos.

I'm spoiled by high MP FF and medium format and some of the sharpest primes for that system so my perspective for what's practical is probably not applicable. I'm surprised how it's not even in competition with the image quality of a professional pocket camera, and an APS-C sensor camera is light years away!

Sure, if you only look at the small images it's ok, but a full 12MP on the screen is way below what I expected. This phone does a good job for a phone, and since we all have phones on us, all of the time, it is worth noting that, for a phone, it is about as good as it gets.

Most of us only occasionally carry a pocket camera, so why compare it to one? Plus, a mid-range phone and an XF10 still don't cost as much as this iPhone.

Sigma's been on a roll with their mirrorless Art series lenses. Does the new 24mm F1. It brings a new, 25MP sensor and bit 4K capture at up to p. We've put it to the test, both in the studio and out in the field. In our tests it delivers big performance and offers a few good reasons why you might choose a 12th-Gen Intel laptop over a Mac. Canon's high end APS-C mirrorless camera has plenty of compelling features, but is it worth the price?

Since Windows Photo View is included with Windows, there really isn't a good reason to seek out an alternative photo viewer.

Overall, ACDSee Free is a good, speedy photo viewer but it could have included a few more features to differentiate itself from the stock Windows Photo Viewer. I'm looking for a photo viewing application with color profile support. My display has wide color gamut, and viewing photos having sRGB profile with a n application that does not understand color profiles means the colors are off. It seems almost no photo viewer can do this, which I find strange and annoying. Even Microsoft's own Photos app does not understand profiles.

Add this feature which I think should be essential in any serious photo viewer and I'm happy to try again. For now, no thanks. Loved it for years. Will recommend to all I know, and even some I don't know. It was the best viewer period. Francis Sawyer Windows only? Wow, what year is this? Too bad. There doesn't seem to be a decent free photo browser anymore. SecondTimeAround Balu: I downloaded "acdsee-free.

GeorgiJuraj blazingly fast! They should have just ported it to modern times, and everything would have been nice.

Don't bother to try it, trust me. Whois Super slow to install. DwrCymru I was stupid enough to install this based on the fact it was a camera raw file viewer, what is it with installations that need to download installations?

GoDP Press "F" for full screen. Waste of time. Edit: Spoke too soon. Turns out you do need an account to use it. GoDP Oh wow. NikonBiologist I like fastrawviewer better, likely due to the interface. AshMills Bridge is not really free, as you need adobe software subscription for another of their products to use it.
